Sobel Airlines was a Belgian air charter company that existed for over 50 years. Sobelair was a specialist in the chartering of full aircraft to a handful of destinations. The most popular route of Brussels to Johannesburg ended in the summer of 2003. Aircraft ranging in capacity from 130 seats up to 272 seats were used to meet charter demands. Unfortunately the continuously changing desires in consumer aviation and tourism didn’t suit Sobel’s business model well.
Flights to Paris, London, Rome, and Frankfurt are well served by the major carriers. The reduction in the amount of charter routes to smaller cities like those served by Sobelair has forced more and more European travelers to go by Eurail (train) or newer discount airlines like Ryanair.
